Matter And Materials Flashcards
Define Matter
It is a physical substance which occupies space and possesses mass.
Kinetic Theory
Body of theory which explains the physical properties of matter in terms of the motions of its constituent particles.
Melting
A phase change from solids phase to a liquid phase.
Evaporation
A phase change from liquid phase to gaseous phase.
Condensation
Phase change from gaseous phase to a liquid phase.
Solidification
The phase change from liquid phase to solid phase.
Sublimation
The phase change from solid phase to gaseous phase.
Deposition
The phase change from a gaseous phase to a solid phase.
Brownian Motion
The erratic random movement of microscopic particles in a fluid, as a result of continuous bombardment from molecules of the surrounding medium.
Diffusion
The net movement of anything generally from the region of higher concentration to lower concentration.
Pure substance
A substance with consistent properties or a substance with one type of particle only.
Impure substance (mixture)
A substance with inconsistent properties.
Heterogeneous mixtures
A mixture with components of the mixtures have different properties like colour or phase.
Homogenous mixture
A mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout.
Solution
A liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (solvent).
