Matter and Material Flashcards
What are particles?
smallest part of a substance
What is matter made up of?
particles that are moving
Describe how particles are arranged in SOLIDS
- close
- small spaces
- regular pattern
- slow vibration
- vibrate in fixed position
- therefore = fixed shape e.g. brick
Describe how particles are arranged in LIQUIDS
- further apart than solids
- small spaces
- not fixed pattern
- move faster more freely
- therefore = take shape of container
Describe how particles are arranged in GASES
- far apart
- big spaces
- move freely, all directions
- fast
- therefore = no shape of their own
- fill whole container
What are mixtures made up of?
substances not chemically joined, easily separated
What methods can be used to separate mixtures?
- decanting
- filtering
- sieving
- hand sorting
- settling
What is a solution?
a mixture can’t identify substances
soluble
can dissolve
solvent
liquid in which a substance dissolves
solute
substance that dissolves in the solvent
insoluble
cannot dissolve
solubility
how well a substances dissolves
saturated
when a solution can hold no more solute
crystallisation
dissolved substance that is changing into solid crystals again
