Matter and Energy Vocab Flashcards
The smallest particle of an element.
atom
The force that hold two atoms together.
chemical bond
A change in matter that produces new
substances.
chemical change
Describes how a substance will react and
change into something new when in the
presence of another substance. It can only be observed at the molecular level.
chemical property
The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
chemistry
A substance made of two or more elements, chemically combined in a set ratio.
compound
The measure of how much mass of a
substance is contained in a given volume, a physical property.
density
A substance that cannot be broken down into
other substances by chemical or physical
means.
element
The ability to do work or cause change.
energy
A measure of how much matter is in an
object.
mass
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
matter
Two or more substances that are mixed
together but not chemically combined.
mixture
A change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not make the material into another substance or change its chemical properties.
physical change
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed/measured without changing the substance into something else.
physical property
A single kind of matter that has distinct
physical and chemical properties.
