Matter and Chemical Change Flashcards
Review terms of Properties & Change; Atoms & Periodic Table; Chemical Compounds; Chemical Reactions
Matter
material substance together with energy that makes up all the observable universe and its phenomenon
Pure substance
a material which contains only one type of particle
Mixture
a combination of two or more substances such that each one’s properties are not lost, but may be hidden
Homogeneous
a mixture in which particles are evenly scattered; a uniform composition
Heterogeneous
a mixture in which particles are not evenly scattered; does not have a uniform composition
Malleable
the property of being flexible, bendable without breaking
Ductile
the property of being able to be stretched into thin wires without breaking
Conductivity
the ability of a substance to be able to carry an electrical currant
Physical change
a change in form but not in chemical composition; no new substances are formed
Chemical change
a change in which one or more new substances are formed
Physical properties
a characteristic of matter that describes how it responds when undergoing a physical change (eg. bending of a malleable object)
Chemical properties
a characteristic of matter that describes how it reacts when undergoing a chemical change (eg. reaction of a substance with electricity)
Atom
smallest indivisible unit
Isotope
atoms with the same number of protons, but different number of neutrons
Ion
an atom or electron with a net electrical charge
Nucleus
Proton
Neutron
Electron
Valance
Electron shell
Energy level
Octet
