Matter And Change Flashcards
Endothermic change
A chemical reaction or process in which a greater amount of energy is required to break the existing bonds in the reactants than is released when the new bonds form in the product molecules.
Mass
A measure that reflects the amount of matter
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space (liquid, solid, gas)
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains all the properties of that element
Element
A pure substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Compound
A chemical combination of two or more different elements; can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means and has properties different from those of its component elements
Physical property
A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the sample’s composition (density, color, taste, melting point, hardness)
Chemical property
The ability or inability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more new substances.
Homogeneous mixture
One that has uniformed composition throughout and always has a single phase; also called a solution
Heterogeneous mixture
One that does not have a uniform composition and in which the individual substances remain distinct
Exothermic change
A chemical reaction or process in which more energy is released than is required to break the bonds in the initial reactants
