Matter Flashcards
What are molecules?
Two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together
Can be atoms of the same element-diatomic molecules
Or atoms of different elements-compounds
What are elements?
Pure substance made up of one type of atom that can’t be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Can be one atoms or two atoms of the same element bonded together.
What are compounds?
Pure substance that consists of two ore more atoms of different elements that are chemically bonded together
Can be broken down into simpler forms by chemical means and not physical means
What are mixtures.
Substance that consists of two or more elements and or compounds that are not chemically bonded but only physically intermingled
Homogeneous- 2+ substances that form the mixture are evenly distributed, one can’t visually separate the components
Heterogeneous- 2+ substances that form mixture are not evenly distributed, one can visually separate the components
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms that carries an electrical charge
