Matter Flashcards
How are solid particles arranged?
They are tightly packed into the space and cannot move.
How are liquid particles arranged?
They are arranged quite loosely but are still touching. They can move around freely.
How are gas particles arranged?
Gas particles don’t touch and can move anywhere they want. They are completely free!
What are atoms?
Atoms are very, tiny particles.
What is expanding in science?
Expanding is when the particles can move about and that extend the size of the object.
What is the melting point?
Melting point is the temperature where in which a solid changes to a liquid.
What is the boiling point?
Boiling point is the temperature in which a liquid turns into a gas.
What is the definition of diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is made up of substances that are not chemically joined.
What is boiling?
Evaporation is the change of state from liquid to gas which forms when bubbles form throughout the liquid.
What are atoms made up of?
Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that dissolves in the liquid.
What is shown on the periodic table on the left of the number going from up to down?
The mass number is on top and the atomic/ proton number is on the bottom.
What is the atomic number the same as?
The number of protons.
What is the number of electrons the same as?
The number of protons.
What is an element?
An element is a substance that is made of only one type of atom. Elements are the simplest substance.
What is the independent variable?
What you change.
What is the dependant variable?
What you measure.
What is the control variable?
What you keep the same.
What is secondary data?
Graphs or data that somebody else has collected is secondary data.
What are the key groups on the periodic table?
The key groups are: group 1,0 and 7
What are periods?
The rows on the periodic table.
What are the columns known as on the periodic table?
Groups.
What is a solvent?
The liquid that he solid dissolves into is called the solvent.
What are most elements?
Most elements are metals.
What are groups?
Groups go vertically and the mass increases as you go down.
What is a polymer?
A polymer is a long chain of monomers.
What are some key properties of metals?
They have high melting points and boiling points. It is very strong.
What did Newlands produce?
He arranged them in mass and realised that the properties of every eighth element was similar. So he created the law of octaves.
What did John Dalton produce?
He arranged the elements in order if their atomic weights.
What did the scientist Dobereiner think of?
He grouped the elements into three, creating triads.
What did the scientist Mendeleev discover?
He found out that the properties were similar.
What is polymerisation?
The process of making a polymer.
What are some properties of group 1 elements?
They are all solids. They are not insulators. They are soft.
What is the line of best fit?
It is a curved to show what the rough results were.
