Matter Flashcards
What is Matter?
Matter is anything that occupies space or has mass and can exist in any three states.
What are Elements and Compounds?
An element is a substance that contains only one type of atom. e.i. oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, copper, silver
A compound is a substance that contains more than one type of atom. e.i. water, sugar
What is the difference between atoms and molecules?
ATOMS are the smallest unit which an ELEMENT can be broken down and still possess the properties.
MOLECULES are the smallest INDEPENDENT unit a SUBSTANCE can be broken down and still possess the properties.
Describe the body of an atom
A dense nucleus that is contained with Neutrons and Protons - protons refer to the atomic number of an atom – that is surrounded by electrons within the valence orbit. Within these orbits, each has a respective number 2, 8, 18, 32 and 50, the electrons can be freed due to an increase in the centrifugal force
The difference of electrons between conductors, semi-conductors, and insulators?
Conductors have 1 to 3 electrons and can be freed easily. e.i. silver and copper
Semi-conductors have exactly 4 electrons and are neither a good conductor or insulators. e.i. carbon and silicon
Insulators have 5 to 8 electrons and are difficult to be freed. e.i. helium
