Matter Flashcards
What is volume
The amount of space something takes up.
Length x width x height, graduated cylinder
What is mass
The amount of matter something has.
Pan balance g. Hundreths
What is density
The amount of mass something has in relation to its volume.
Mass\volume
What is physical property
A property that describes a substance by itself such as color, shape, density, and hardness.
What is a physical change
A change that does not make a substance into a new substance.
What is matter
Anything that takes up space.
What is a mixture
A combination of two or more substances that keep their original properties.
What is a solution
A mixture in which all the substances are evenly distributed.
What is a suspension
A uniform mixture that contains particles large enough to be seen.
What is a colloid
A mixture that contains particles to small to be seen.
What is a alloy
Solutions that involve two or more metals.
What is a emulsion
A mixture of two substances that don’t dissolve.
What is a chemical change
A change in which one or more new substances are made.
What is a chemical property
A property that involves the ability of a substance to react with other materials and form new substances.
What is reactivity
The ability of a substance to go through a chemical change.
What is stability
The ability of a substance to resist going through a chemical change.
What is an acid
On the Ph scale it ranges from 0 to 6.999 and turns blue litmus paper red.
What is a base
I’m the Ph scale it ranges from 7.001 to 14 turns red litmus paper blue.
What is an indicator
A material that indicates or tells whether a substance is an acid or base.
(Litmus paper)
What is the density of water
1.0
What is the ph scale
A scale that ranges from 0 to 14 and classifies substances as an acid or a base.
How would you separate salt, iron fillings, gravel, and sand
First get the gravel then dissolve the salt next stick a magnet in to get the iron fillings finally use a coffee filter to get the sand.
What is conservation of mass
Matter can be changed from one form to another.
