Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that takes up space; anything and everything.
Liquid
A liquid is a substance where the particles are still close together, but not as tightly bonded or in a fixed structure like a solid.
Solid
firm and stable in shape; The particles are packed together
Gas
a substance or matter in a state in which it will expand freely to fill the whole of a container. The particles are free to move.
Atoms
The smallest part of a substance that cannot be broken down chemically
Mass
the quantity of matter within a given object
Molecules
A group of two or more atoms that bond together.
States of Matter
The three states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases.
Particle
Any basic unit of matter and energy.
Volume
A physical quantity that measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by matter.
Graduated Cylinder
A graduated cylinder is a tube to measure volume liquids
Density
Density measures an object compared to its volume
Properties of Matter
Any characteristic that can be measured or observed
dissolve
When substances mix together to form a solution
Physical Change
When it changes shape, texture, color, etc.
Chemical Change
A change that causes a new substance to be formed.
Mixture
When two things are mixed together they keep their physical properties.
Solution
When two or more things are mixed together and dissolve to form a new substance.
