Matter . Flashcards
The smell of hot food reaches you several meters away , but to get smell of cold food you need to go close . Why ? .
Solids difuse at a very slow rate . But if temperature of solid is increased, then rate of diffusion of solid particles into air particles . this is due to increase in kinetic energy of solids particles .
A diver is able to cut through water in a swimming pool . Why ?
Because matter is not continuous , it is made up of particles which have spaces between them . Also attractive forces of water are not very strong .
What provides the best evidence about the random motion of particles of matter ?
Diffusion .
Define solids ?
Olids have fixed volume , shape and density . In solids , particles are closely packed and have less spacing between them .
Example : stone .
Define liquids ?
Liquids have fixed volume but indefinite shape . In liquids there is a weaker force of attraction and more spacing between the particles .
Examples : milk .
Define gasses ?
Gasses do not have fixed shape nor volume . Particles of gasses have very less attraction and large spacing .
How will u justify that ice , water and steam are the 3 states of a substance and not different substances?
When ice is melted it forms water . When water is heated it forms vapour . Further if we cool water it forms ice. Therefore ice , water and steambare three states of substances .

What is meant by physical property of substances????
Those properties of substance which can be observed without altering the identity of the state .
Inter conversion of matter ?
Phenomena of one state of matter into another an back to original is called inter conversion of matter .
Why is Kelvin the best scale of measuring ???
Kelvin is best because it has no maximum temperature… It can be measured to any extent .
What is normal room temperature ?
25°C or 298 K .
Which is more volatile alcohol or water ?
Alcohol is because boiling point of alcohol is lower than that of water .
Is dry ice same thing as ordinary ice ?
No it is not . Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, while ordinary ice is freezed water.
