matter Flashcards

1
Q

interconversion of matter definition

A

the phenomenon of change of matter from one state to another state and back to the original state, by altering the conditions of temperature and pressure, etc , is known as the inter conversion of matter.

Q

definition and properties of gases

A

state of matter with definite mass but no definite volume or shape
-contained on a vessel has definite mass
-intermolecular spaces are veryyyyy high and hence are high compressable
-intermolecular forces are negligble
-no free spaces
-diffuse into one another rapidly
-extremely low density

Q

material definition and kinds

A

the term used for a particular kind of matter is called material.
homogeneous- same properties and composition throughout
heterogeneous-different properties and composition in different parts

Q

definition and properties of solids

A

a state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume
-generally rigid
-any number of free surfaces
-intermolecular spaces are small intermolecular force is high
-generally high density
-little to no thermal expansion
-do not diffuse

Q

kinetic theory of matter

A

-all matter is composed of small particles called atoms
-the particles are in a state of unending motion and hence they have kinetic energy
-with the supply of heat energy, the particles start moving more vigorously, and hence the kinetic energy increases. the reverse happens if the matter is cooled
- the particles attract each other with a force. cohesive if they are different kinds of particles and adhesive if the particles are of the same type.
-The force of attraction decreases with increases in distance and vice versa

Q

definition and properties of liquids

A

a state of matter with definite mass and volume but no definite shape
-force of attraction is less than solids but more than gases and thus are compressible
-only one free surface at the top
-density is relatively less than solids
-expand on heating and contract on cooling way more than solids
-can diffuse depending on the nature of the molecules
