Matter Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of matter
Matter
Anything and everything with mass and volume
Atom
smallest unit of matter, cannot be broken down
Element
A type of atom, a pure substance that cannot be broken down
Chemical bond
The link between 2 atoms holding them together
Substance
something you cannot break into simpler parts using physical changes
Molecule
a combination of 2 or more atoms
Compound
2 or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
Two or more substances physically combined in any amounts
Heterogeneous Mixture
Two or more substances that aren’t evenly mixed, you can see different parts
Homogeneous Mixture
Two or more substances that are evenly mixed, you cannot see different parts, a solution
Solution
A homogeneous mixture
Solute
Substance that gets dissolved
Solvent
Substance that does the dissolving
*universal solvent is water
Physical Properties
Any characteristic that can be observed using your 5 senses without changing the substance
Chemical Properties
Any characteristic that describes how matter interacts with another substance
Biological property
The characteristic of having all 9 features of living things
Physical Change
Change to the physical properties of matter, substance is not changed into a new substance
Chemical Change
Change to the chemical properties of matter, substance is changed into a new substance with new properties, cannot change back
Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed,
The number of atoms/mass of the reactants equals the number of atoms/mass of the products.
Phase/State of matter
- solid, liquid, and gas
- Changed by changing temperature or pressure
Solid
- Definite shape & definite volume
- Particles packed together and vibrate but have fixed positions
- Lower energy
Liquid
- No definite shape but has definite volume
- Particles spread apart
- Medium energy
Gas
- No definite shape & no definite volume
- Particles spread far apart
- High energy
Melting
- matter changing from solid to liquid
- ⬆ energy, ⬆ particle movement
- melting point= temperature substance melts at
Freezing/ Solidification
- matter changing from liquid to solid
- ⬇ energy, ⬇ particle movement
- freezing point= temperature substance freezes at
Vaporization/Evaporation
- matter changing from liquid to gas
- ⬆ energy, ⬆ particle movement
- Boiling point= temperature substance turns to gas at
Condensation
- matter changing from gas to liquid
- ⬇ energy, ⬇ particle movement
Sublimation
- matter changing from solid to gas
- ⬆ energy, ⬆ particle movement
Deposition
- matter changing from gas to solid
- ⬇ energy, ⬇ particle movement.
