Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What is volume
Measure of the amount of space an object takes up
What is Density
2).What is the equation
A measure of how much matter occupies a given amount of space/how tightly packed matter is
P=m/v
What are the three states of matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
What does the particulate theory of matter state
This describes the composition and behavior of matter in terms of particles
What are the 4 postulates of matter
1).All matter is composed of tiny objects called particles
2).All particles have space between them
3).Particles are in constant motion due to their kinetic energy
4). Particles are attracted to each other due to forces of attraction
What is mass
A measure of how much atoms an object contains
What is Diffusion ?
This the movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration until equilibrium is reached
What is osmosis
This the movement of water molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
What is a concentration
The concentration of a solution is a measure of the amount of solute that has been dissolved in a given amount of solvent or solution
Are solids, liquids and gases examples of matter ?
NO
Why does the rate of diffusion ion increase with temperature ?
Heat provides energy for particles and they are able to move
faster and spread out more quickly.
Is the rate of diffusion slower or faster for heavier particles?
Slower
Does the medium that diffusion take place affect the rate ?
Why?
Yes
The less dense the packing if particles in a medium the faster particles will diffuse
What are some importance of osmosis
• It assists plants in receiving water
• transports water in and out of cells
• it helps in the preservation of fruit and meat
• used kidney dialysis
• to remove salt and other impurities from water
