Q

What are the characteristics of particles of matter?

A
  1. Particles of matter have space between them. This space is called interparticular or intermolecular space
  2. Particles of matter are always in random motion.
  3. Particles of matter attract each other.

Q

What is intermolecular force of attraction?

A

The force of attraction between the particles of molecules of matter, which helps them together is known as intermolecular force of attraction.

Q

What is a solid?

A

A solid has a definite shape and a definite volume.
The particles are tightly packed in solids.
The intermolecular force of attraction is very strong and intermolecular space is almost negligible.
The particles are not free to move.
The can only vibrate about their mean positions.
Solids are rigid and incompressible.

Q

What is a Liquid?

A

A liquid has a definite volume but no definite shape.
The particles in a liquid are less tightly packed in comparison to solid.
The intermolecular force of attraction in weaker and intermolecular gaps are larger.
The particles are free to move within the bulk.
Liquid can flow and are therefore also called fluids.

Q

What is a gas?

A

A gas has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.
The particles in a gas are far apart.
The intermolecular force of attraction between the particles is very weak and the space between them is large.
The particles are free to move in any direction.
They can flow.
They can be compressed inside a small container and can spread into a large space available to them.
Gases also take the shape of the container in which they are kept.

A

The temperature at which a solid starts changing into liquid is called its melting point.

17
Q

What is vaporisation or evaporation?

A

The process by which a substance in its liquid state changes to its vapour state is called vaporisation or evaporation.

18
Q

What is boiling?

A

When a liquid changes into it gaseous state on heating, it is called boiling.

19
Q

What is boiling point?

A

The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling and changes into its gaseous state is called its boiling point.
