Q

Steps on the core practical investigate the densities of solids and liquids

A

1) measure the mass of the object using a mass balance
2) fill the bottle with a liquid of a known density (e.g water)
3) place the stopped into the bottle and dry the outside
4) measure the mass of the bottle
5) empty the bottle and place the object into the density bottle. Repeat steps 2&3. Measure the mass of the bottle
6) the mass of the displaced water = the mass of the bottle - (mass of the bottle - the mass of the object)
U know the density of water, so u can use V=m/p to find the volume displaced = volume of object
7) calculate the density of the object using the equation with the mass measured in step 1 and the volume calculated in step 6

Q

How does heating a system change the energy stored within the system and raise its temp or produce changes of state

A

When u heat a liquid, the extra energy is transferred into the particles’ kinetic energy stores, making them move faster, when enough of the particles have enough energy to overcome their attraction to each other, big bubbles of gas for, in the liquid -boil
