Matter Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
They are made up of only one type of particle (eg. Elements and compounds). They can be separated by chemical means
What are impure substances?
Made up of different types of particles (eg mixtures). They can be separated by physical means
What are examples of chemical separation?
Heat, light and electricity
What are examples of physical separation?
Sporting, distillation, magnets, evaporation, filtration, separating funnels.
What is the difference between miscible and immiscible liquids?
A miscible liquid can dissolve readily in some other liquid, whereas an immiscible liquids do not dissolve in other liquids.
What is the difference between soluble and insoluble?
Soluble solids are those solids ( solute ) which when mixed with the right liquid (solvent), forms a solution. (eg. Salt and water). Insoluble solids are those solids which do not dissolve in water.
What is a metal alloy?
A mixture of metals (homogenous) eg. Brass, bronze or steel
Relate a table explaining the difference between an element, compound and mixture?
In book
What are the characteristics of metals?
Metals have luster (shiny), silver in colour (besides gold and copper),ductile(wires), malleable (flat sheets) and are good conductors of heat and electricity
What are characteristics of non metals?
Different colours, brittle, good insulators and dull.
What are salts?
A compound formed when acids react with bases
What are molecules?
They are comprised of two or more different or the same atoms chemically bonded together to form a new unit
What are samples of diatomic elements?
They take on a linear shape. Eg. hydrogen, oxygen chlorine)
What is the only triatomic element with a linear shape?
CO2 (carbon dioxide)
What are the only 2 liquid elements at room temperature?
Mercury and Bromine
