Matter Flashcards
Matter
Matter has volume and mass, it takes up space.
Matter is made up of tiny atoms
Mass is the amount of material.
Element
Elements only have one type of atom. It can only be made up of one type of atom.
Like gold bars, copper, metal bars.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that remains that element.
Ex: one atom is still gold
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms bounded together.
If it’s made of only one type of atom, it’s an element
Particle
A tiny part of matter, usually an atom or molecule
Chemical change
A change in matter where one or more new substances is made.
Molecules are broken apart and rearranged into different molecules with different properties
Physical change
A change in matter where there is no new substance produced
3 ways can have a physical change in size, shape, and state
Definitive indicator
The presence of a new kind of matter
How we know for sure there was a chemical reaction.
Clues a chemical change has happened
Color change, Oder change, gas produced, temperature change, and texture change.
Solid
In a solid, the atoms are very attracted to one another.
Liquid
The particles of molecules are weakly attracted to one another, the particles move around each other.
Gas
The molecules are poorly attracted to each other, they move past each other and have no volume or shape
Conduction
Energy is transferred by a fast and slow particles hitting each other
Evaporation
Liquid Particles gain energy and break away from one another and become gas
Condensation
Water vapor (gas) slows down to overcome their speed to become liquid
