What is a integers?
whole numbers, including zero and negative numbers e.g. 0, 120 ,5 ,-73, -394, 88
What are Rational numbers?
Numbers that can be written as fractions, integers and decimals. These numbers are either terminating or recurring decimals. E.g. 3 = 3/1, 1/7, 0.333… = 1/3 (recurring), 0.25 = 1/4
What does irrational numbers mean?
Numbers that can’t be written as fractions. When represented as a decimal number, they don’t terminate or repeat e.g. π, √8, -√11
What is a square number?
Is the product of a number multiplied by itself e.g. 2x2 = 4 = 2²
What is a cube number?
Is the product of a number multiplied by itself and then by itself again
What is a factor?
A number that divides another number evenly, leaving no remainder e.g. factors of 12 are: 1,2,3,4,6 and 12 because all of them go exactly into 12
What is the highest common factor (HCF)?
The HCF of two numbers is the largest whole number which is a factor of both numbers e.g. HCF of 18 and 30 is 6
What are multiples?
a number that can be divided by a smaller number, or itself, an exact number of times, without a remainder
What i s the lowest common multiple (LCM)?
The LCM of two numbers is the smallest whole number which is a multiple of both numbers e.g. LCM of 4 and 10 is 20
What does approximate mean?
Not exact; close to the exact value (this often means rounding to a certain number of significant figures or decimal place)
What does convert mean?
To change from one unit of measure to another
What does calculate mean?
To calculate an approximate value for a number. (usually rounding each number within a calculation to a significant figure will make it easier)
What does evaluate mean?
To work out the value of a numerical or algebraic expression
What does express mean?
To represent or show something in a different form or way
What does identify mean?
To find, determine or establish the answer to something
What does simplify mean?
To make simpler. In maths, this can involve reducing a fraction to its simplest form or collecting like terms in algebraic expressions
What does construct mean?
To draw geometric shapes and angles
What does prove mean?
To demonstrate, with evidence, that something is true. (A question may ask you to prove algebraically)
