Q

What is a cube number?

A

A number that is another whole number cubed e.g.

13 = 1 x 1 x 1 = 1

23 = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8

33 = 3 x 3 x 3 = 27

so 1, 8 and 27 are the first three cube numbers.

18
Q

What is a factor?

A

A factor is a number that divides into another number exactly.

e.g. 6 is a factor of 18

2 is a factor of 40

19
Q

What does expanding an expression mean?

A

Multiplying out the brackets

e.g. 3(y + 1) = 3y + 3

20
Q

What does factorising an expression mean?

A

Putting it into brackets.

e.g. 6z - 3 = 3(2z - 1)

21
Q

What is the highest common factor (HCF) of two numbers?

A

The highest common factor is the biggest number that divides into both.

e.g. the HCF of 30 and 12 is 6

If you list the factors of 30 and 12, 6 is the largest number in both lists.

22
Q

What is an improper fraction?

A

An improper fraction has a larger numerator than denominator.

23
Q

What is an integer?

A

A positive or negative whole number.

24
Q

What is an interior angle?

A

The angle formed between two adjacent sides of a polygon.

25
Q

What does the intersection of two graphs mean?

A

The point where they cross.

26
Q

What is a line of best fit?

A

A straight line drawn on a scatter graph that fits the data as closely as possible.

27
Q

What is the lowest common multiple (LCM) of two numbers?

A

The smallest number that they both go into

e.g. the LCM of 6 and 8 is 24

If you write out the times tables of 6 and 8, 24 is the smallest number in both lists.

28
Q

What is a multiple?

A

The multiples of a number are those numbers that can be divided by it; the numbers in its times table.

e.g. the multiples of 7 are

7, 14, 21, 28, 35,…

29
Q

What is a numerator?

A

The number on the top of a fraction.

30
Q

What is the origin on a graph?

A

The place where the axes cross. The point (0,0).

31
Q

What does parallel mean?

A

Parallel lines have a constant distance between them and will never cross. They have the same gradient.

32
Q

What does perpendicular mean?

A

Perpendicular lines cross at a right angle.

33
Q

What is a polygon?

A

A polygon is a 2D shape with 3 or more straight sides.

34
Q

What is a prime number?

A

A prime number has exactly two factors, itself and 1. The first five prime numbers are

2,3,5,7,11

1 is not a prime number.

35
Q

What is a reciprocal?

A

The reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by the number.

To find the reciprocal of a fraction, flip it upside down.

e.g. the reciprocal of 2 is 1/2

the reciprocal of 4/7 is 7/4

36
Q

What is a regular polygon?

A

A regular polygon has all side lengths and angles the same.

37
Q

What does similar mean?

A

Similar shapes are exactly the same shape but can be different sizes.

38
Q

What is a square number?

A

A number that is another whole number squared e.g.

12 = 1 x 1 = 1

22 = 2 x 2 = 4

32 = 3 x 3 = 9

so 1, 4 and 9 are the first three square numbers.

39
Q

What is a square root?

A

A square root is the number that, when squared, equals the number given.

e.g. The square root of 4 is 2 since 22 = 4

40
Q

What is a triangle number?

A

A number that can be represented by a traingular arrangement of dots. A number in the sequence

1, 1+2, 1+2+3, 1+2+3+4 etc.

41
Q

What is a vertex?

A

A vertex is a corner of a 3D shape.

42
Q

What is a mixed number?

A

A mixed number has a whole number part and a fractional part.

43
Q

What is a hypotenuse?

A

The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right angled triangle; the side opposite the right angle.

44
Q

What is cumulative frequency?

A

The cumulative frequency is the sum of all the frequencies so far in a distribution. It is a ‘running total’.
