Q

What is converting between units of distance?

A

• To convert distance (lengths) from a larger unit into a small unit, multiply by the relevant power of 10
• To covert distance (lengths) from a smaller unit into a larger unit divide by the relevant power of 10

Q

What are the units of time?

A

Time is measured in seconds (S) minutes (min) and hours (hr). These units of time are related as follows
60s= 1 min
60 min= 1 hr
24hr= 1 day
7 days= 1 week

Q

Covert the following times jn the 12 hour clock to times in the 24 hour clock
(I) 2.12 am
(Ii) 8.36pm
(III) 12.15pm

A

(I) 2.12 am
This is before moon so we remove the “am” and add 0
2.12am= 02:12
(II) 8:36pm
This is afternoon so we remove the pm and add a 12 to the hour part
8:36 pm = 20:36
(III) 12:15pm
This is afternoon so we remove the pm
12:15pm = 12.15

Q

Convert the following times in the 24-hour clock to times in the 12-hour clock
(I) 14:36
(II) 2.45
(III) 23:56

A

(I) 14:36
This is after noon so we subtract 12 and add on 14:36= 2.36pm
(II) 2.45pm
This is before noon so we remove the 0 and add “am”
02:45=2:45am
(iII) 23:56
This is afternoon so we subtract 12 and add “pm”
23:56= 11:56pm

Q

Claire took a part in a cross country race and completed the course in 1 hour and 12 minutes her average speed for the race was 17.5 km per hour. What was the distance that she ran?

A

Firstly convert the minutes into hours;
12 divided by 60= 0.2 hours
Time= 1.2hr speed= 17.5km/hr
Distance= speedxtime
= 17.5 x 1.2
=21km

Q

Jane runs at an average speed of 4 metres per second. How long will it take her to run 3000metre race at this pace?

A

Speed= 4m/s and distance = 3000m
Time= distance divide speed
Time= 3000 divide four= 750 seconds
Convert 750 seconds into minutes and second
750 divided 60= 12.5 minutes
= 12 minutes and 30 seconds

17
Q

Use the ratio method to calculate the speed of a journey of 45km if it takes one and a half hours to complete

A

Distance:time
45:1hr 30 mins
45km:1.5 hours
30km:1 hours
Speed= 30km/h
Speed= 30km/h

18
Q

Find the time taken to complete a journey of 200m at a speed of 40m

A

Distance:time
40m:1secondx5
200m:5 second
Tjme= 5 seconds
