Q

Expression

A

An expression or algebraic expression is any mathematical statement which consists of numbers, variables and an arithmetic operation between them. For example, 4m + 5 is an expression where 4m and 5 are the terms and m is the variable of the given expression separated by the arithmetic sign +.

Q

Coefficient

A

A number used to multiply a variable.
Example: 6z means 6 times z, and “z” is a variable, so 6 is a coefficient.

Factoring

A

Factoring (called “Factorising” in the UK) is the process of finding the factors:
Factoring: Finding what to multiply together to get an expression.
It is like “splitting” an expression into a multiplication of simpler expressions.
Example: factor 2y+6
Both 2y and 6 have a common factor of 2:
2y is 2×y 6 is 2×3 So we can factor the whole expression into:
2y+6 = 2(y+3)
So 2y+6 has been “factored into” 2 and y+3

Expand

A

Expand is when we multiply to remove the ( ) Example: To expand 3(a+b) we multiply 3 by (a+b) to get 3a + 3b
