Math Vocabulary: Unit 4 Flashcards
The distance of a number from zero on the number line. Always positive.
Absolute Value
A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation.
Algebraic Expression
The number that is raised to a power.
Base
The number by which a variable is multiplied. Ex: the 2 in 2x
Coefficient
This is formed when two number lines intersect at their zero points.
Coordinate Plane
-a(b+c)=ab+ac
Distributive Property
The number that tells how many factors there are at the base.
Exponent
The inequality symbol>
Greater Than
A mathematical sentence that compares two unequal expressions using one of the symbols. ,_, or not equal.
Inequality
Positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
Integers
The inequality symbol
Less Than
Terms containing the same variable.
Like Terms
Numbers with a value less than zero.
Negative Numbers
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Operations
Numbers that have the same digit but opposite values. Ex: 3 and (-3)
Opposite Numbers
This is used to name a point on the coordinate plane.
Ordered Pair
The intersection of the x-axis and y-axis.
Origin
Numbers with a value larger than zero.
Positive Numbers
Numbers expressed using a base and an exponent.
Powers
The four regions separated by the x and y-axis within a coordinate plane.
Quadrants
A symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number.
Variable
The horizontal number line in the coordinate plane.
X-axis
The first numbered of the ordered pair.
X-coordinate
The vertical number line in the coordinate plane.
Y-axis
