Study for quiz
Mixed number
a number consisting of an integer and a proper fraction. Example: 5 ¾.
Commutative property
numbers on which we operate can be swapped from their position without making any difference to the answer.
Reciprocal
a mathematical expression or function so related to another that their product is one; the quantity obtained by dividing the number one by a given quantity.
Example: 7 is the number and 1/7 is the reciprocal.
Compatible numbers
the numbers that are easy or compatible. It means the numbers are easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Example: 500 and 300.
Unit fraction
a fraction whose numerator is 1. Example: ½.
Improper fraction
a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. Example: 5/4.
Proper fraction
a fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator. Example: 2/3, 1/6, 10/100.
Row
a horizontal (left to right) arrangement of objects in an array.
Column
a vertical (up/down) arrangement of objects in an array.
Area
the total space taken up by a flat (2D) surface or shape of an object (the amount of surface a figure covers).
Inverse operations
two operations which are exactly opposite. One undoes the action of the other. Example: if we add 5 and 2 pens, we get 7 pens. Now subtract 7 pens and 2 pens and we get 5.
Unit ratio
a 2-term ratio expressed with a second term of one. Example: if you ran 70 yards in 10 seconds, you ran an average of 7 yards in 1 second.
Simplest form
a fraction is in simplest form if the top and bottom have no common factors other than 1. You cannot divide the top and bottom any further.
Dimensional analysis
analysis using the fact that physical quantities added to or equated with each other must be expressed in terms of the same fundamental quantities (such as mass, length, or time). Example: converting units of measurement.
Scaling
drawing an object that is proportional to the actual size of the object.
