Math vocabulary Flashcards
What is a variable?
A symbol, usually a letter, that represents one or more numbers.
What is an equation?
A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal, often containing an equal sign (=).
What is a coefficient?
The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable.
What is a constant?
A fixed value that does not change, typically a number without variables.
What is a term?
A single number, a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.
What is an exponent?
A number that indicates how many times the base is multiplied by itself.
What is a polynomial?
An expression made up of terms that are added or subtracted, with variables raised to whole-number exponents.
What is a function?
A relationship where each input (x) has exactly one output (y).
What is the slope of a line?
The rate of change or the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change (rise/run).
What is the mean?
The average of a set of numbers, calculated by dividing the sum of the numbers by the total
What is the median?
The middle value in a set of numbers when arranged in order.
What is the mode?
The number that appears most frequently in a set of numbers.
What is the range in a data set?
The difference between the highest and lowest values.
What is the perimeter?
The total distance around a two-dimensional shape.
What is the area?
The measure of the surface enclosed by a two-dimensional shape.
What is a prime number?
A whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors: 1 and itself.
What is a composite number?
A whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors.
What is the Associative Property?
The grouping of numbers does not affect the result.
What is the Commutative Property?
The order of numbers does not affect the result.
What is the Distributive Property?
Multiplying a number by a sum or difference is the same as multiplying each term separately and combining the results.
What is the Identity Property?
There is a value that does not change a number when combined with it.
What is the Zero Property?
Combining a number with zero in a specific way results in zero.
