math vocabulary Flashcards
numbers that characterize a set of data
statistics
the sum of the value in a set divided by the number of values in the set
mean
the middle value in a set when the values are arranged in numerical order
median
the difference between the greatest and least values in the set
range
values that divide data in to 4 equal parts
quartiles
the median of the lower half of a data set
lower quartile (Q1)
the median of the whole set of data
second quartile
the median of the upper half of the set of data
upper quartile (Q3)
the difference between the third and first quartiles in a set of data
inner quartile range (IRQ)
the average distance between the individual data values and the mean
standard deviation
the data representation that uses a number, line, Xs, dots, or other symbols to show frequency. Also called a line plot
dot plot
a value in a data set that is much greater or much less than most of the other values in a data set
outlier
to make distorted in a way to make it inaccurate, unfair, or misleading
skew
a bar graph that is used to display the frequency of data divided into equal intervals
histogram
a graph that shows a set of data is distributed. It is formed using the minimum, maximum, 1st quartile, 2nd quartile, and median.
box plot
bell shaped distribution with a tail on each end
normal distribution
