Math vocabulary Flashcards
Variable
A symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number.
What is the variable in X +2?
X is the Variable
What property is this “7+9 = 9+7”
Commutative Property: the order in which 2 numbers are added or multiplied doesn’t change their sum or product
What property is this “3 + (9 + 4) = (3 + 9) + 4”
Associative Property: the way in which 3 numbers are added or multiplied doesn’t change their sum or product
What property is this “13 + 0 = 13” or “7 x 1 = 7”
Identity Property: the sum of and addend and 0 is the addend. The product of a factor and 1 is the factor.
What are the terms?
3x + 7 + x
3x, 7, x
Each part separated by addition or subtraction signs in an algebraic expression.
What is the coefficient? 3x
3, the numerical factor of a term
Which is the constant?
3x + 7 + x
7, a term without a variable
Which are the “like terms”?
4 + 2x + x
2x and x, like terms contain the same variable (in this example the variable is x)
What is the sum?
The sum is the answer to an addition problem. 2 + 2= 4, the sum is 4
What is the product?
The product is the answer to a multiplication problem. 5 x 3 =15, the product is 15
