Math Vocab Lesson 8 Flashcards
Average Rate of Change
A function y=f(x) between x=a and x=b is the slope of the line through (a, f(a)) and (b,f(b))
Axis of symmetry
The vertical line that divides the parabola into two symmetric parts
Even function
f(-x)= f(x) for each x in the domain of f
Odd function
A function y=f(x) is odd when f(-x)=-f(x) for each x in the domain of f
Intercept forms
A quadriceps function written in the form f(x)=a(x-p)(x-q)
Maximum value
The y- coordinate of the vertex of the graph of f(x)=ax2 + bx +c when a<0
Minimum value
The y-coordinate of the vertex of graph of f(x)=ax2 + bx+ c when a>0
Parabola
The U-shaped graph of a quadratic function
Vertex form of a quadratic function
A quadratic function written in the form f(x)=a(x-h)2 + k, where a=/0
Vertex of a parabola
The lowest point on a parabola that opens up or the highest point
Zero of a function
An x- value of a function f for which f(x)=0; an x-intercept for a graph of the function
