Average (or “Mean”)
[av-er-ij, av-rij]
The midway point in a series of numbers.
Ex. : The average of 10 and 20 is 15.
Denominator
[dih-nom-uh-ney-ter]
The bottom number in a fraction.
Ex. : In the fraction ¼, the 4 is the denominator.
Difference
[dif-er-uhns, dif-ruhns]
The result of subtraction.
Ex.: The difference of 5-3 is 2.
Dividend
[div-i-dend]
The number being divided into.
Ex. : The dividend in 10 ÷ 5 is 5.
Divisor
[dih-vahy-zer]
The number you are dividing by.
Ex.: The divisor in 10 ÷ 5 is 5.
Even
[ee-vuhn]
Any integer that is divisible by 2.
Ex.: 2,4,6,14,20,34,100….
Exponent
[ik-spoh-nuhnt, ek-spoh-nuhnt]
A small raised number next to a big number that indicates how many times to multiply the big number by.
Ex.: The 2 is the exponent in 32
Improper Fraction
[im-prop-er] [frak-shuhn]
A fraction with a larger numerator than denominator.
Ex.:10/4
Integer
[in-ti-jer]
A number that doesn’t contain a fraction or a decimal.
Ex.: -5, -4, 0, 4, 5…
Mixed Number
[mikst] [nuhm-ber]
A number that contains both an integer and a fraction.
Ex.: 6 ¼
Negative Number
[neg-uh-tiv] [nuhm-ber]
Any number less than zero.
Ex.: -7, -0.25…
Numerator
[noo-muh-rey-ter, nyoo-]
The top number in a fraction.
Ex.: In the fraction ¼, the 1 is the numerator.
Odd
[od]
A number not divisible by 2.
Ex.: -3, -1, 1, 3, 5, 11….
Positive Number
[poz-i-tiv] [nuhm-ber]
Any number greater than zero.
Ex.: 1, 4, 0.25…
Prime Number
[prahym] [nuhm-ber]
A number divisible only by 1 and itself. 1 is not considered a prime number. all prime numbers are odd except for 2.
Ex.: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13….
