Math Study Guide: Topic 12: Inequalities (pages 56-57) Flashcards
What are “inequalities?”
Inequalities are like equations, except that you are solving for a range of values that the variable can be.
If x > 2, this means x is some value to the right of 2 on the number line (and there are many values like that!)
What does “>” mean?
greater than
What does “≥” mean?
Greater than or equal to
What does “

What does “≤” mean?

With equations, what do you have to do to add, subtract, multiply, or divide by whatever you want?
Do the same thing to both sides of the equation
With inequalities, what do you have to do to add, subtract, multiply, or divide by whatever you want?
Do the same to both sides (like an equation) with one important exception:
If you mutliply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality sign
