Math - Gr11 - chapter 4 - Exponential Functions Flashcards
Describe the characteristics of exponential functions and their graphs
They all contain the poin (0,1) because a^0=1 ; they x-axis is always an asymptote ; they are decreasing if 0 < a < 1 and increasing if 1 < a ; the domain is all real numbers ; the range is y > 0 ; the graph is continuous
Compare exponential functions with linear and quadratic functions
Algebraically, linear functions are polynomial functions with a highest exponent of one, exponential functions have a variable in the exponent, and quadratic functions are polynomial functions with a highest exponent of two
Evaluate powers with integer and rational exponents and simplify expressions involving them
.
what is 5^2
5 x 5 = 25
what is 5^-2
For negative exponents, put a one over it, then it’s 1 over 5x 5 = 1 over 25
What is 5^0
1
What is 5^1/2
Square root of 5
What is 5^1/3
Cube root of 5
What is 5^2/3
this is the same a (5^2)^1/3 or (5^1/3)^2 or the cube root of 5^2
