Math finals pt.1 Flashcards
What is statistics
Statistics the science of collecting and analyzing numerical data
Is statistics a branch of science or a branch of mathematics?
It is a branch of science that uses mathematical models as essential tools (John Tukey)
Why do we need to study statistics?
It is used in our daily lives, economics, weather forecasting, machine learning, in psychology, to determine the efficacy of a drug, etc.
What is descriptive statistics?
It involves methods of organizing, summarizing, and presenting data.
What is inferential statistics?
involves methods of using information from a sample to draw conclusions about the population.
What is population
it refers to all the members of a group of interest
What is sample
refers to selected members of a group of interest
What is the result of the population
Parameter
What is the result of the sample
Statistic
Statistic is the (blank) of the parameter
is the Estimate
Variables are to be (blank) and Constants are (blank)
Variables are to be measured and Constants are fixed
Quantitative variables are (blank) and Qualitative variables are (blank)
Quantitative variables are numerical and Qualitative variables are textual
In Quantitative variables, what’s the difference between Ratio and Interval?
Ratio is with an absolute zero, and Interval is with a relative zero.
Give an example of absolute and relative zeros
absolute ex: Age (yrs), Weight (lbs), Daily allowance (Php)
relative ex: Temperature (in C or F)
In Qualitative variables, what is the difference between Ordinal and Nominal
Ordinal are variables with order, and Nominal are variables with no order.
