math final vocab Flashcards
arithmetic sequence
each term increases by adding or subtracting a constant
asymptote
line continually approaching curve but never touch
change of base formula
logb of a=x, bx=a
zeros
The x value when y =0
Vertical line test
A way to see if a line if a function
Vertex form
f(x) = a(x-h) squared + k
Synthetic Division
How to divide a binomial in the form of x-k from a polynomial
Step Function
A piecewise function defined by a constant value over each part of its domain
set-builder notation
Uses symbols to define a set, in terms of the properties of the set (Think of the All Real Numbers symbol)
circle
2d shape where are points are at an equal distance from the center
combined variation
when a variable depends on 2 or more other variables
common difference
constant difference of terms in an arithmetic sequence
common log
when the log doesn’t have a written out base the base is 10
common ratio
constant factor between consecutive terms on a geometric sequence (3 is the common ratio in 9, 27, 81, etc.)
completing the square
ex: (x-8)²=x² -16x + 64
complex conjugate
number with an equal real part and an imaginary part equal in magnitude but opposite in sign. ex: x+iy and x-iy are complex conjugates
complex fraction
fractionception, ex: 1/4 over 3/9 (a fraction divided by a fraction)
complex number
a+bi (real plus imaginary number) (Ex: 1+3i)
composition of functions
operation that takes two functions f and g and produces a function h such that h(x) = g(f(x)). (putting two functions together)
compound inequality
two inequality statements joined either by the word “or” or by the word “and.” ex: x>y and x
conic section
curve obtained as the intersection of the surface of a cone with a plane. The three types of conic section are the hyperbola, the parabola, and the ellipse
consistent
no contradictions in the problem
constant of variation
constant ratio of two variable quantities. where k is the constant of variation, ex: If y varies directly as x and y=15 when x=24 , find x when y=25. (think direct function)
continuous relation
can be graphed as a smooth line or curve and has an infinite number of points
correlation coefficient
in a regression it is denoted by r from -1 to 1 when r is close to 1 points lie close to a positive slope when r is close to -1 the points lie close to a negative slope (magnitude of slope)
dependent
variable that depends on another variable, ex: y is dependent in y=mx+b
dimensions of a matrix
if a matrix has a rows and b columns, it is an a×b matrix
direct variation
regular line on a graph y=kx (y=3x)
discriminant
The discriminant is the part of the quadratic formula underneath the square root symbol b²-4ac (b is the discriminant)
ellipse
an oval, traced by a point moving in a plane so that the sum of its distances from two other points (the foci) is constant (think oval)
