Math Exam Flashcards
Irrational number
A number that cannot be expressed as a over b, where a and b are integers and b doesn’t equal 0
Integer
Whole numbers and their opposites 1,-1 2,-2
Absolute value
The distance between the number and 0 on a number line
Complex fraction
When the numerator , denominator, or Both contain a fraction
Commutative property
The way in which 2 numbers are added or multiplied does not change the product
10•5=5•10
9+5=5+9
Associative property
The way in which 3 numbers are grouped in addition or multiplication does not change the product
(5+4)+2=5+(4+2)
Additive identity property
The sum of any number and 0 is that same number
Multiplicative identity property
The product of any number multiplied by 1 is that same number
Distributive property
Everything inside the () is multiplied by whatever is outside the ()
Rational number
A number that can be written as a fraction in the form of a over b, where a and b are integers and b is not equal to 0
Reciprocal property
The reciprocal for one half is two over one
Similar figures
The corresponding angles are congruent, or have the same measure, and the corresponding sides are proportional and opposite corresponding angles
Proportion
Any equation that states that two ratios are equivalent
Cross products
Function
A special relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range
(Vertical line test)
Relation
a collection of ordered pairs containing one object from each set
(X’s repeat)
Slope
Y=mx+b
(M=slope)
(B=y intercept)
a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line.
Algebraic expression
A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation.
Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown value
Evaluate
Replace the variable with known values and follow the order of operations
Equation
a mathematical statement that two things are equal. It consists of two expressions, one on each side of an ‘equals’ sign. For
Inequality
like an equation that uses symbols for “less than”()
Percent of change
A ratio that compares the change in quantity to the original amount
Percent of change equals amount of change over original amount
Percent error
error applied when comparing an experimental observed quantity E, with a theoretical quantity T, which is considered the True Value. The percent error is the absolute value of the difference divided by the True Value times 100
Simple interest
Interest= principle($)•rate(%)•time(years)
interest paid only on the original principal, not on the interest accrued.
Intercept(s)
The point at which a curve intersects an axis is known as an Intercept
Y=mx+b
(B=intercept)
Slope intercept method
Y=mx+b
(M=slope)
(B=y intercept
Quadrant
The x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane into four regions. These regions are called the quadrants.
top right square is quadrant 1 and bottom right is quadrant 4
Coordinate pair
Two numbers that explain it’s exact location on a coordinate plane
Bar notation
In repeating decimals, the line above the digits that repeat
