Math Definitions Flashcards
What are integers? (4)
Any positive or negative whole number, including zero
Integers do not include? (name 3)
fractions (1/2), decimals (0.5), or mixed numbers (1 1/2)
Rational numbers include? (name 3)
Rational numbers include all integers, decimals, and fractions
Any _______ or ______ decimal number is a _____ number.
termination, repeating, rational number
Irrational numbers cannot be written as ________ or _______ .
fractions or decimals
What are the rules for adding and subtracting negative numbers?
change the sign of the number AFTER the minus symbol and then FOLLOW the addition rules.
The result of division is called
quotient
Result of multiplication is called
product
If the signs are the SAME, the product or quotient is
positive when multiplying or dividing numbers
If the signs are OPPOSITE, the product or quotient is
negative when multiplying or dividing numbers
When more than TWO factors are multiplied together, the sign of the product is
determined by how many NEGATIVE factors are presents
If there are an odd number of negative factors, then the product is ____ . An even number of negative factors indicates a _____ product.
negative, positive
What does 2(4) equal,
2(4) = 2x2x2x2=16
What is the common mnemonic for the order of operation?
PEMDAS
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
Parentheses, Exponents, Multiple, Division, Add, subtraction
How are fractions added & subtracted?
A common denominator must be found, then add or subtract the two numerators and retain the common denominator
How are fractions multiplied?
multiply the TWO numerators together and the TWO denominators together
How are fractions divided?
FLIP the numerator and denominator of the SECOND fraction and then proceed as thought it were multiplication
What rule MUST be followed when + & - decimals
Decimal points must always be aligned
How do you multiply decimals?
Multiply as though whole numbers. Once the product is calculated, count the number of places to the RIGHT of the decimal in both the multiplicand and the multiplier. Then, count the number of places from the RIGHT of the product and place the decimal in that position.
How do you divide with decimals?
The divisor must be CONVERTED into a whole number. Begin by moving the decimal in the divisor to the RIGHT until a whole number is created.
NEXT, move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces to the RIGHT.
Example, 4.9 into 24.5 would become 49 into 245. 245/49 =5
