What is assessed on the pelvic exam in the first maternity visit?
Bony architecture, uterus, adnexae, abnormal vaginal discharge, genital lesions.
What is tested for in the pap smear in the initial visit?
Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
What blood tests should be done in the first maternity visit?
CBC Rubella Titer Hep B ABO group Rh status antibody screen VDRL for syphilis HIV test
What tests are done in weeks 15-20?
Quad Test
US (more toward week 20)
What is done in weeks 24-28?
Glucola Test
Hb to look for anemia
Redo Rh test and use Rhogam if needed (lasts 12 wks)
TdaP if needed
What is done at 35 weeks and later?
GBS
-if positive do antibiotics during delivery
What is average weight gain in pregnancy?
25-35lbs
obese women gain less, tiny girls gain more
How much coffee should be taken in each day during pregnancy?
No more than two cups a day
Why is constipation common in pregnancy?
Progesterone slows down GI motility
How long does bleeding occur postpartum?
Up to 3 days but slows down.
What is lochia serosa and lochia alba?
Serosa: mucopurulent post partum discharg for up to 3 weeks
Alba: another yellowish discharge up to 6 weeks
How long before the uterus goes back to its normal size?
6 weeks
it is back within the pelvis around 2 weeks post partum
When can sexual activity continue post partum?
When discharge stops and is comfortable. If any episiotomies were done, at least 3 weeks
What is post partum hemorrhage?
Bleeding of greater than 500mL following delivery
or 1000mL in C-section
Most common cause of post partum hemorrhage
Uterine atony
