What are ferrous metals?
metals that contain iron
Ferrous metals
mild steel, carbon steel, cast iron
Non-ferrous metals
aluminium, copper, zinc, tin
Alloys
stainless steel, duralumin , brass
What are alloys?
mixture of 2 or more metals or a metal and another element
Thermosetting plastics
epoxy resins, urea-formaldehyde, polyester resin
What are thermoplastics?
they can be shaped when heated
Thermoplastics
PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, Acrylic, ABS, PMMA
What are Elastomers?
polymers at room temperature can be deformed under pressure and upon release of pressure, return to original shape
Elastomers
natural rubber, neoprene (polychloroprene rubber)
What are composites?
Two or more materials combined together by bonding with enhanced properties
Composites
glass fibre reinforced plastic GRP, carbon fibre reinforced plastic CFRP, MDF, hardboard, chipboard, plywood
drawing papers
layout paper, tracing paper, copier paper, cartridge paper
commercial printing papers
bond, coated
natural fibres
cotton, linen, wool
boards
mounting board, corrugated board, foam board, folding boxboard, foil-lined board
What are natural fibres?
fibres from plant sources and can be recycled, biodegrade and naturally reoccur
What are smart materials?
Materials which change physical properties in response to their environment, such as light, temperature, electricity and pressure.
manmade fibres
nylon, polypropylene, and polyester
what are manmade fibres?
do not occur naturally, they are synthetic and developed in a lab
What are modern materials?
A material that has been engineered to have improved properties as a result of man made materials and human intervention
