Q

What are the ferrous metals?

A

-Cast iron
-Mid/low carbon steel
-Tool/high carbon steel
-Stainless steel (Alloy) contains chromium and nickel
[Increases strength, toughness, ductility and makes it stainless]

Q

What are the non-ferrous metals?

A

-Aluminium
-Zinc
-Copper
-Tin
-Brass (Alloy) contains copper and zinc
[Increases malleability, ductility electrical conductivity and it is resistant to corrosion]

Q

How do the different components affect the properties of steel?

A
  • More iron = more soft (malleable)

- More carbon = more hard

Q

What metal would be used for the main body of a kettle and why?

A
  • Stainless steel (Brushed and lacquered)
  • Corrosion resistant, to resist scaling inside the kettle
  • Stainless steel is durable and hard to resist knocks and dents
  • Can withstand high temperatures
  • Easy to clean, so the kettle is low maintenance
