Materials - Metals Flashcards
What is the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals?
Ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals don’t contain iron
What are the ferrous metals?
-Cast iron
-Mid/low carbon steel
-Tool/high carbon steel
-Stainless steel (Alloy) contains chromium and nickel
[Increases strength, toughness, ductility and makes it stainless]
What are the non-ferrous metals?
-Aluminium
-Zinc
-Copper
-Tin
-Brass (Alloy) contains copper and zinc
[Increases malleability, ductility electrical conductivity and it is resistant to corrosion]
Why are steels all ferrous?
-Iron is a main component of steel
How do the different components affect the properties of steel?
- More iron = more soft (malleable)
- More carbon = more hard
What are alloys?
-Mixtures of two or more metals made to improve the properties of existing metals
Why do ferrous metals often need protection?
-They can oxidise (rust)
What metal would be used for the main body of a kettle and why?
- Stainless steel (Brushed and lacquered)
- Corrosion resistant, to resist scaling inside the kettle
- Stainless steel is durable and hard to resist knocks and dents
- Can withstand high temperatures
- Easy to clean, so the kettle is low maintenance
