Materials management Flashcards
What is materials management concerned with?
How the operation coordinates its activity with that od its immediate supply chain connections, both upstream and downstream.
What are the five principles of lean thinking?
Specify value - Operations should be driven by a clear understanding of what the customer values.
Identify the value streams - A value stream is the set of activities that is required to get the product or service to the customer.
An examination of value streams has potential to identify three types of activity;
- Those that create value for the customer
- Those that create no value for the customer but are required for operational reasons.
- Those that create no value for the customer and are not required for operational reasons.
Create flow - The essence of lean thinking is that work or customer being processed should flow continuously and smoothly without interruptions, as if they were flowing along a pipeline.
Push not Pull - The challenge set by lean thinking is to have operations schedules governed by demand pull rather than production push.
Strive for perfection - As lea thinking is adopted, many challenges will be encountered. Lean thinking encourages workplaces to face these challenges and to find ways of overcoming them.
