Hardboard
Is a thin material made from wood fibres. It is often used in places it cant be seen. It is weak and brittle but is very low cost.
Plywood
It is made from thin sheets of timber called veneers. Each layer is glued with the grain running 90º to the grain of the previous layer. This creates strength across the board.,
Chipboard
It is made from wood chips. It is lightweight and only suitable for indoor use. It has unsightly edges which needs to be dressed. Chipboard is only covered with a plastic face, for use in furniture and work tops.
Block board
It is a sandwich of plywood and wood strips. It can be faced with a veneer to give it a decorative finish. It is very strong and is often used in work surfaces.
MDF
medium diversity fibre board
It is made from fine wood fibres. This board has a smooth finish on all sides and is the best choice when a good. paint finish is required.
Aluminium
It is lightweight and easily formed. It is used. in drink cans, cooking utensils and window frames.
Copper
It conducts electricity and heat. It is easily formed and is used to make electrical wire, circuitry, water pipes and boilers.
Tin
It is soft and easily formed. It is used for plating and soldering.
Brass
It casts well and is easily joined by soldering and brazing It is used for screws, hinges , door handles and other decorative uses.
Stainless Steel
It forms well and is rust resistant. It is used as garden tools, sinks and cutlery.
Acrylic
It is hard, durable it is easily cut and polished but it. scratches easily. It is used as reflectors/lenses, signs, lighting and lightweight screens.
ABS
It is rigid, opaque, tough, impact resistance and strong . It is used in protective headgear, household goods, suitcases and car bumpers.
Polypropylene
It is hard, lightweight and chemical and fatigue resistant. It is used in chairs, medical equipment and containers with. integral hinges.
Nylon
It is tough chemical, fatigue, wear and friction resistant. It is used in gears, equipment parts, combs, brush bristles, clothing and castings.
Melamine
It is hard, tough, scratch resistant, taste and odourless . It is used in electrical equipment, surface coatings, bottle caps and toilet seats.
