Materials Flashcards
What is the definition of Hardness?
A hard material cannot have its shape changed very easily and will dent or scratch a softer material.
E.g. Diamond, steel
What is the definition of Strength?
A strong material is very difficult to break when it is stretched or squeezed.
E.g. Reinforced concrete, steel
What is the definition of flexibility?
A flexible material can be bent easily without breaking.
E.g. Rubber, and bendy plastic
What is the definition of elasticity?
An elastic material can be stretched but will go back to its original shape when it’s released.
E.g. Elastic bands, springs
Attraction to a magnet; what would some magnetic materials be?
Iron, steel, nickel and cobalt.
What is the definition of toughness?
A tough material is difficult to break by hitting it with another object.
E.g. Wood, most metals and some plastics.
What is the definition of brittleness?
A brittle material breaks easily if it is hit.
E.g. Ceramics, glass and some plastics.
