Materials Flashcards
1
Q
how is paper made?
A
- wood is barked
- then it is cut and pulped
- water is added to the pulp
- wood pulp
- chemicals are added to the pulp and its is filtered
- the paper is then put on rolls
2
Q
What are the main features of hardwood
A
- deciduous
- has leaves
- grows slower than coniferous
- tighter grain
- expensive
- more dense and stronger
3
Q
What are the main features of softwood
A
- coniferous (evergreen)
- sustainable - grows fast (30 years to reach maturity)
- cheaper
- holds resin, may leak
- prone to water damage
- e.g. pine
4
Q
features of wood
A
- number of rings correlates to age
- timber comes from trees
- knots and grains
- knots where branches grow
- flammable
- hard and soft wood
5
Q
Thermoplastics
A
- long thin chains of molecules tangled with no fixed pattern, few links across the pattern
- when heated become soft and can be shaped
- can be reheated and reshaped many times
6
Q
Thermo-setting plastics
A
- created with a resin and a catalyst
- long ‘cross-linked’ chains of molecules make for a rigid structure
- when heated become but only once, stiffen when cooled
- cannot be reheated and reshaped
