Materials Flashcards
Material
The name given to any substance.
Examples: wood, plastic, metal.
Property
How a material behaves.
Example: its melting point, density, hardness.
Melting point.
The temperature where a solid turns into a liquid.
Example: ice (solid) turns into liquid (water) at 100oC.
Strength (how strong)
A strong material is difficult to break or change shape.
Example: metal, some plastics.
Softness (how soft)
A soft material breaks or changes shape easily.
Example: fabric.
Stiffness (how stiff)
A stiff material does not bend easily.
Example: wood, metal.
Flexible (bendy)
A flexible material bends easily.
Example: plastic.
Hardness (how hard)
A hard material is difficult to cut.
Example: diamond.
High density
A material with a high density (dense) is heavy for its size.
Example: metal.
Low density
A material with low density is not heavy for its size.
Example: plastic.
