Materials Flashcards
what is the method for making paper
- tiny chips of wood are cooked in chemicals and water to create a mushy pulp
- the pulp is poured of a fine mesh
- the water drains away and the fibres link together when they touch
- the fibres are sent through rollers which squeezes out any excess water which strengthens the fibres
list four types of board
cardboard
carton board
mounting board
corrugated board
how is normal board made
gluing layers of pulp papers
how is thick board made
stick together sheets of paper
define timber
the general name for wood materials
list 3 general facts about hardwoods
. slow growing
. normally hard but can be soft and weak
. can be machined into a variety of standard sizes
list 3 general facts about softwoods
. generally smaller in standard size
. grow faster
. supplied in standard sections
what are the 5 things that must be considered when choosing wood
. grain pattern . colour . texture . workability . structural strength
what are the 9 things that must be considered when choosing a metal
. elasticity . ductility . malleability . hardness . work hardness . brittleness . toughness . tensile strength . compressive strength
define elasticity
. the ability to regains its original shape after it has been deformed
define ductility
. the ability to be stretched without breaking
define malleability
. the ability to be pressed, spread and hammered into shapes
define hardness
. resistance to scratching cutting and wear
define work hardness
. a change in the hardness of the metal due to repeated hammering or strain
define brittleness
. the ability to break easily with little bending
