materials Flashcards
whats hooks law
the extension of a stretched object is proportional to the force/load
F=Ke
how do you know the object is elastic and what happens to its atoms
if material returns to its original shape once force is removed
when material is put under tension, the atoms of the material are pulled apart from one another
atoms can move small distances relative to their equilibrium positions without acc changing position
once the load is removed the atoms return to their equilibrium position
how do you know a material is plastic and how are the atoms in it
if the material is permanently stretched
- some atoms in the material move position relative to one another
- when the load is removed the atoms don’t return to their original positions
- the object stretched past its elastic limit shows plastic deformation
what is conserved during stretching
Energy
whats tensile force and whats compressive force
tensile is the stretch and compressive is the squash
tensile is for +ve forces
compressive is for -ve forces
