Materials Flashcards
What’s the equation to calculate work done/elastic strain energy of a spring
1/2 F ∆x
Define breaking stress?
He maximum stress a material can withstand before breaking
What is a brittle material
A material that fractures without plastic deformation first
What is ductile
A material that can withstand a large plastic deformation, so it can be stretched into wires
What is elastic deformation?
When a material can return to its original shape after applying stress. Any work done is stored as elastic strain energy.
Define laminar flow.
A state of flow where layers of fluid move parallel with little to no mixing
What is the limit of proportionality ?
The point at which the stress of an object is so great that hooks law no longer applies.
What is plastic deformation?
When a material is permanently deformed after an applied stress due to the atoms moving relative to one another. Work is done in plastically deforming the material and is dissipated as heat.
What is turbulent flow?
A state of flow where layers mix together unpredictably causing a chaotic state
Define viscosity.
A measurement of the friction within a fluid, it acts to reduce the flow of the fluid. It’s dependant on temperature.
