Materials Flashcards
How do you find the density of a substance?
Density = mass / volume
What is Hooke’s law?
Hooke’s law states that the force required to stretch a spring is directly proportional to the extension of the spring.
What does a Force(Tension)-Extension graph look like?
It is a straight line through the origin until the material is stretch passed the limit of proportionality and the line will curve off, becoming flatter as the elastic material has become a plastic material.
What does the gradient of a force-extension graph tell us about the material?
The gradient of a material’s force-extension graph tells us the material’s spring constant.
What does the spring constant of a material tell us?
The force required to extend the material by 1m.
What happens to the spring constant of 2 springs in parallel?
The new spring constant will be the spring constants of both springs added together.
What happens to the new spring constant of 2 springs in series with each other?
The new spring constant will be 1 over the addition of each spring constants reciprocal
1/Knew = 1/Kq + 1/Kp
