Material Properties Flashcards
Plasticity
ability of material to be permanently changed in shape
Elasticity
ability of a material to bend and flex then return to its normal shape and size e.g. elastic band.
Strength
ability to withstand force without breaking or deforming (compressive
strength (malleability) & tensile strength (ductility))
Hardness
how resistant the material is to wear.
Toughness
the materials ability to absorb a sudden impact before breaking
Durability
materials resistance to wear and tear, resistance to corrosion and
deterioration
Electrical conductivity
how a material resists an electric current. Low resistance
= conductor = metal
Thermal conductivity
how heat travels through a material.
Magnetic conductivity
material that has the ability to attract or repel certain
materials.
Malleable
a solid material that can be bent or hammered into shape without
breaking (usually metals)
Ductile
a solid material stretches under tensile stress. If ductile, a material may be
stretched into a wire.
Biodegradability
The capacity of a material to decompose over time as a result of
biological activity, especially to be broken down by microorganisms.
