Material Deprivation (External Factor) Flashcards
Many other sociologists see MDep as the main cause rather than Cultdep
Define Material Deprivation
Being unable to afford basic necessities like food and heating.
Does Material Deprivation affect educational success positively or negatively?
Negatively
What are the 4 aspects of Material Deprivation?
- Diet and Health
- Fear of Debt
- Housing
- Educational Costs
What Sociologist talks about Housing
Harker
What does Harker say about Housing
- Poor conditions: more likely to be off school i.e damp housing can make w/c children ill. Bad housing increases likely hood of getting ill by 25%.
- Overcrowded: Living in cramped conditions means lack of space to study and esp young children cant explore and play.
- Temporary Housing: Poorer children who live in TH, will be more likely to miss school due to impacts this has on mental health, may even have to move schools, etc.
Which Sociologists talks about Diet and Health?
Howard and Wilkinson
What does Howard say about Diet and Health?
W/c children have a poorer diet due to a healthy diet being expensive. This lower intake of vitamins and minerals means a weaker immune system, leading to more time off school.
What does Wilkinson say about Diet and Health?
Lack of balanced diet affects psychologically, leading to poorer concentration rates & higher anxiety rates. This negatively affects classroom activity, higher absence rates and difficulty coping with exams.
Which Sociologists talk about Educational Costs?
Bull and Smith + Noble
What does Bull say about Educational Costs?
Although education is free there are added costs like school trips which w/c families find hard to afford. W/c children also wear hand-me-downs which can lead to being bullied and low self esteem.
What does Smith and Noble say about Financial Support?
W/c cant afford private schools or the travel costs to get to a better school in a better area so may be stuck with a poor one in their area. W/c students may also have to work outside of school to help fund things in the home leading to burn out.
Which Sociologists talk about Fear of Debt?
Callendar and Jackson & the NUS survey
What do Callendar and Jackson say about Fear of Debt?
W/c students more likely to see debt negatively and fear it so less likely to want to go to Uni as they see the high costs it has.
What does the NUS Survey say about Debt?
W/c children overall get less financial support from their parents at Uni. Only 43% of w/c students get financial support compared to 81% of m/c students.
