children from poorer fam have to do without equipment and miss out on the experiences that would enhance their educational achievement - Bull (1980)- refers to this as ‘the cost of free schooling’
Tanner et al (2003)- cost of items (transport, books, uniforms etc.) places heavy burden on poor fam
result? children have to do with hand-me-downs and cheaper/unfashionable equipment this results in bullying and being isolated/stigmatised
for many children, suitable clothes are essential for ‘fitting in’- Flaherty-20% of those entitled to FSM do not take up entitlement (fear of stigmatisation)
